Welcome Spring [Apr. 13th, 2006|02:16 pm]

It's finally warm enough to open the windows and let Spring in. Yesterday I went to my quilt guild meeting and had a great time. Got lots of nice comments on my haircut (from long to really short -- I like the big changes.) The woman I took my first applique class with was there, and we've become friends so she had asked that I bring the double wedding ring quilt that I am working on along. I got lots of positive comments on it, which was nice, and they liked the quilt top I just finished, that will go on the guest bed when it is done. We went out to lunch and generally had a real nice time.

The double wedding ring is "almost done". There are 22 more stars to applique into the intersections of the rings, then I can put on the border (gotta figure out how wide to make it) and then I can figure out how I am going to quilt it. I've got a lot of possibilities on how to do that, but no favorite way. I plan to look for inspiration in the coming weeks and I hope that I can find/design a beautiful quilting pattern that will compliment the piecing.

Today I feel moved to bake bread, so I'll be starting that as soon as I hit send. Just a basic white bread. I'm trying to time it so that it's just done when J gets home. Very tough with yeast breads -- they take a lot longer to rise in our cold house so I can never count on the recipe's timing.

For Easter I think I'll make the gingerbread cake that J likes so much (and complains that I never make for him) in a bundt pan, and fill the center with dyed eggs. That ought to satisfy my craving to celebrate without going overboard and stressing out.

I hope everyone's having a good Spring, and all the best wishes for the various holidays we're celebrating.

YAY!

You must have survived most of tax time.

Been wondering how you've been...

I'm better, now that Spring is finally really here. I was feeling very Wintery for quite a while into Spring. The tax office is MUCH better than last year, now that my role has been dialed down to just bookkeeper, and I'm only going in to the office once or twice a week.

Now if I could only get the housemess in order...

Take heart: no one's house is as messy as ours.
I know: I've checked :-}

I refuse to compete on this front (I might win!) I think we're likely tied. :)

Do you have a "bake-n-fill" bundt pan, or are you just going to dig out the cake?
The Hubby (tm) got me the full contingent, and it's pretty neat!

Ahh.. I've got lotsa bundt pans, I "collect" them (aka I don't buy every single one but I get the ones I think are pretty.) I think you mean putting filling inside the cake when you say "bake-n-fill"? So that the cake encloses the filling and it's hidden? I don't have one of those. What I plan is to take advantage of the fact that this cake is dark rich brown in color, plate it and fill the open center with piled up pastel-dyed eggs just to look nice and Eastery. Cake and eggs to be eaten separately -- or together, we all like both. :)

If you mean the specially made pans that have an insert to keep the cake from baking solid - it makes a concave section all around the bundt cake on the inside - so you can fill it up with other stuff, then that's what I meant. I made a sort of chocolate strawberry shortcake for The Hubby's (tm) cirthday by putting whipped cream and strawberries inside the cake.

Yep, that's what I thought you meant. The birthday cake sounds truly delish!

I went overboard and made the bottom layer out of brownie, rather than cake. The Hubby (tm) was really touched because, after all, I can't have chocolate. My Holy Grail of recipes is a moist blondie recipe that'll be chewy, like brownies, instead of just a fat cookie or slightly thick cake.
